"Vampire: the Masquerade--Shadows of New York" Review

Publisher:  Draw Distance

Genre:  Visual Novel

Summary:  A year after becoming a vampire and the designated clan Lasombra representative of New York, Julia is ordered to investigate a vampire political figure's death--a task that holds great peril...or promise.

Gameplay:  There are occasional choices in what to do each night, and not everything can be done in one playthrough.  Dialogue options define Julia's traits and therefore the story's ending.

Style:  The style mimics the previous game, "Coteries of New York"--stylized figures and colorful backgrounds with occasional movements.  The sounds and music enhance without distracting.

Story:  Julia is an engaging protagonist, and much of the game is her (usually) interesting philosophizing dialogue with herself and other characters.

However, after a reaching a melancholy but satisfying end, I was disturbed by the achievement that popped up proclaiming it was the "Good Ending."  I'll decide that for myself, thank you.  The other ending (correspondingly labeled the Bad Ending) might also be considered good, by some lights (or shadows.)  It's possible the labels were meant to be ironic or wry, but after a game of ambiguous musing, it just came across as tone-deaf.  More topical names for the endings would have been better.

It's also disappointing that after all the little choices in task and dialogue, there are only two endings.  Granted, it's still an improvement over the previous game's one.
